Thou Shalt Not Take the Name of YHWH thy God in Vain

The Name of YHWH

YHWH is His Name. Exodus 15:3, Jeremiah 33:2, Amos 5:8, 9:6

YHWH of Hosts is His Name. Isaiah 47:4, 48:2, 51:15, 54:5, Jeremiah 10:16, 31:35, 32:18, 50:34, 51:19, Amos 4:13

And YHWH shall be king over all the earth: in that day shall there be one YHWH, and his name one. Zechariah 14:9

And Moses said unto God, Behold, when I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you; and they shall say to me, What is his name? what shall I say unto them? And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you. And God said moreover unto Moses, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, YHWH God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, hath sent me unto you: this is my name for ever, and this is my memorial unto all generations. Exodus 3:13-15

And God spake unto Moses, and said unto him, I am YHWH: And I appeared unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, by the name of God Almighty, but by my name JEHOVAH was I not known to them. Exodus 6:2,3

Because I will publish the name of YHWH: ascribe ye greatness unto our God. Deuteronomy 32:3

I am YHWH: that is my name: and my glory will I not give to another, neither my praise to graven images. Isaiah 42:8 (Jeremiah 16:21)

Therefore hear ye the word of YHWH, all Judah that dwell in the land of Egypt; Behold, I have sworn by my great name, saith YHWH, that my name shall no more be named in the mouth of any man of Judah in all the land of Egypt, saying, The Lord GOD liveth. Jeremiah 44:26

And he said, I will make all my goodness pass before thee, and I will proclaim the name of YHWH before thee; and will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will shew mercy on whom I will shew mercy. Exodus 33:19

The name of YHWH is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe. Proverbs 18:10

And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved. Acts 2:21

Moses and Aaron among his priests, and Samuel among them that call upon his name; they called upon YHWH, and he answered them. Psalms 99:6

And in that day shall ye say, Praise YHWH, call upon his name, declare his doings among the people, make mention that his name is exalted. Isaiah 12:4

And I will strengthen them in YHWH; and they shall walk up and down in his name, saith YHWH. Zechariah 10:12

Then they that feared YHWH spake often one to another: and YHWH hearkened, and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before him for them that feared YHWH, and that thought upon his name. Malachi 3:16

The Name of Yashuah

And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment. And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us. 1 John 3:23,24

And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins. Matthew 1:21 (1:25, Luke 1:31, 2:21,

But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name. John 20:31

For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them. Matthew 18:20

Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ; Ephesians 5:20

That the name of our Lord Jesus Christ may be glorified in you, and ye in him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ. 2 Thessalonians 1:12

Taking His Name in Vain

Thou shalt not take the name of YHWH thy God in vain; for YHWH will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain. Exodus 20:7 (Deuteronomy 5:11)

And YHWH spake unto Moses, saying, Bring forth him that hath cursed without the camp; and let all that heard him lay their hands upon his head, and let all the congregation stone him. And thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel, saying, Whosoever curseth his God shall bear his sin. And he that blasphemeth the name of YHWH, he shall surely be put to death, and all the congregation shall certainly stone him: as well the stranger, as he that is born in the land, when he blasphemeth the name of YHWH, shall be put to death. Leviticus 24:13-16

And ye shall not swear by my name falsely, neither shalt thou profane the name of thy God: I am YHWH. Leviticus 19:12

But the prophet, which shall presume to speak a word in my name, which I have not commanded him to speak, or that shall speak in the name of other gods, even that prophet shall die. And if thou say in thine heart, How shall we know the word which YHWH hath not spoken? When a prophet speaketh in the name of YHWH, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which YHWH hath not spoken, but the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of him. Deuteronomy 18:20-22

Wherefore glorify ye YHWH in the fires, even the name of YHWH God of Israel in the isles of the sea. Isaiah 24:15

Therefore my people shall know my name: therefore they shall know in that day that I am he that doth speak: behold, it is I. Isaiah 52:6

And if a Levite come from any of thy gates out of all Israel, where he sojourned, and come with all the desire of his mind unto the place which YHWH shall choose; Then he shall minister in the name of his YHWH God, as all his brethren the Levites do, which stand there before YHWH. Deuteronomy 18:6,7

And the priests the sons of Levi shall come near; for them YHWH thy God hath chosen to minister unto him, and to bless in the name of YHWH; and by their word shall every controversy and every stroke be tried: Deuteronomy 21:5 (10:8, 18:5)

Bless His Name

Give unto YHWH the glory due unto his name: bring an offering, and come before him: worship YHWH in the beauty of holiness. 1 Chronicles 16:29

The sons of Amram; Aaron and Moses: and Aaron was separated, that he should sanctify the most holy things, he and his sons for ever, to burn incense before YHWH, to minister unto him, and to bless in his name for ever. 1 Chronicles 23:13

Give unto YHWH the glory due unto his name; worship YHWH in the beauty of holiness. O magnify YHWH with me, and let us exalt his name together. Sing unto YHWH, bless his name; shew forth his salvation from day to day. Give unto YHWH the glory due unto his name: bring an offering, and come into his courts. Blessed be the name of YHWH from this time forth and for evermore. Praise YHWH; for YHWH is good: sing praises unto his name; for it is pleasant. Let them praise the name of YHWH: for his name alone is excellent; his glory is above the earth and heaven. Psalms 29:2, 34:3, 96:2,8, 113:2, 135:3, 148:13

And said, Naked came I out of my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return thither: YHWH gave, and YHWH hath taken away; blessed be the name of YHWH. Job 1:21

Swearing by His Name

Thou shalt fear YHWH thy God; him shalt thou serve, and to him shalt thou cleave, and swear by his name. Deuteronomy 10:20 (6:13)

And ye shall not swear by my name falsely, neither shalt thou profane the name of thy God: I am YHWH. Leviticus 19:12

And it shall come to pass, if they will diligently learn the ways of my people, to swear by my name, YHWH liveth; as they taught my people to swear by Baal; then shall they be built in the midst of my people. Jeremiah 12:16

Again, ye have heard that it hath been said by them of old time, Thou shalt not forswear thyself, but shalt perform unto the Lord thine oaths: But I say unto you, Swear not at all; neither by heaven; for it is God’s throne: Nor by the earth; for it is his footstool: neither by Jerusalem; for it is the city of the great King. Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black. But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil. Whoso therefore shall swear by the altar, sweareth by it, and by all things thereon. And whoso shall swear by the temple, sweareth by it, and by him that dwelleth therein. And he that shall swear by heaven, sweareth by the throne of God, and by him that sitteth thereon. Matthew 23:20-22

And I will restore to you the years that the locust hath eaten, the cankerworm, and the caterpiller, and the palmerworm, my great army which I sent among you. And ye shall eat in plenty, and be satisfied, and praise the name of YHWH your God, that hath dealt wondrously with you: and my people shall never be ashamed. And ye shall know that I am in the midst of Israel, and that I am YHWH your God, and none else: and my people shall never be ashamed. And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions: And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit. And I will shew wonders in the heavens and in the earth, blood, and fire, and pillars of smoke. The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and the terrible day of YHWH come. And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of YHWH shall be delivered: for in mount Zion and in Jerusalem shall be deliverance, as YHWH hath said, and in the remnant whom YHWH shall call. Joel 2:23-32 (Acts 2:16-21, Romans 10:13)

For then will I turn to the people a pure language, that they may all call upon the name of YHWH, to serve him with one consent. From beyond the rivers of Ethiopia my suppliants, even the daughter of my dispersed, shall bring mine offering. In that day shalt thou not be ashamed for all thy doings, wherein thou hast transgressed against me: for then I will take away out of the midst of thee them that rejoice in thy pride, and thou shalt no more be haughty because of my holy mountain. I will also leave in the midst of thee an afflicted and poor people, and they shall trust in the name of YHWH. The remnant of Israel shall not do iniquity, nor speak lies; neither shall a deceitful tongue be found in their mouth: for they shall feed and lie down, and none shall make them afraid. Zephaniah 3:9-13

And I will bring the third part through the fire, and will refine them as silver is refined, and will try them as gold is tried: they shall call on my name, and I will hear them: I will say, It is my people: and they shall say, YHWH is my God. Zechariah 13:9

But unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings; and ye shall go forth, and grow up as calves of the stall. And ye shall tread down the wicked; for they shall be ashes under the soles of your feet in the day that I shall do this, saith YHWH of hosts. Malachi 4:2,3

Curses of Breaking the Third Commandment

Therefore thus saith YHWH concerning the prophets that prophesy in my name, and I sent them not, yet they say, Sword and famine shall not be in this land; By sword and famine shall those prophets be consumed. And the people to whom they prophesy shall be cast out in the streets of Jerusalem because of the famine and the sword; and they shall have none to bury them, them, their wives, nor their sons, nor their daughters: for I will pour their wickedness upon them. Jeremiah 14:15,16

In that day there shall be a fountain opened to the house of David and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem for sin and for uncleanness. And it shall come to pass in that day, saith YHWH of hosts, that I will cut off the names of the idols out of the land, and they shall no more be remembered: and also I will cause the prophets and the unclean spirit to pass out of the land. And it shall come to pass, that when any shall yet prophesy, then his father and his mother that begat him shall say unto him, Thou shalt not live; for thou speakest lies in the name of YHWH: and his father and his mother that begat him shall thrust him through when he prophesieth. And it shall come to pass in that day, that the prophets shall be ashamed every one of his vision, when he hath prophesied; neither shall they wear a rough garment to deceive: But he shall say, I am no prophet, I am an husbandman; for man taught me to keep cattle from my youth. And one shall say unto him, What are these wounds in thine hands? Then he shall answer, Those with which I was wounded in the house of my friends. Zechariah 13:1-6

And now, O ye priests, this commandment is for you. If ye will not hear, and if ye will not lay it to heart, to give glory unto my name, saith YHWH of hosts, I will even send a curse upon you, and I will curse your blessings: yea, I have cursed them already, because ye do not lay it to heart. Behold, I will corrupt your seed, and spread dung upon your faces, even the dung of your solemn feasts; and one shall take you away with it. And ye shall know that I have sent this commandment unto you, that my covenant might be with Levi, saith YHWH of hosts. Malachi 2:1-4
