Personal Update

It has been one busy month around here since my last post.  From mid-July to mid-August my family moved from a small three-bedroom apartment to a large four-bedroom house in the country.  We kept our business going without closing it to move, so I moved while my wife maintained the business work flow.

Then, a week and a half after we finished moving our things and cleaning the apartment, my grandmother purchased and moved into a trailer three quarters of a mile away from our new house.  I helped with unloading, and my family has been helping with her personal care since the last part of August.  She has been prescribed about 21 hours per week of personal care services.  We got her lights and phone turned on and oil for her heater, and have been slowly unpacking her things.

The same day my grandmother moved, and the day before, I had a booth promoting our tuxedo business at the local university.

A week and a half after my grandmother came, my family welcomed another new member: baby Zedekiah, born September four.  My wife has been active in a limited way since then, and I have been doing double duty maintaining our work flow and keeping the house in order.  Things are almost back to normal now.

Through all of this, and almost without a break, have been a string of late nights and some all-nighters sewing for various departments and individuals at the university as the new semester began.

Three weeks ago, I was asked and I agreed to help at the local farmers’ market.  I am operating a card swiping machine that allows people to use food stamps to purchase fresh produce from local growers at the market.  I have been researching and exploring the benefits and advantages of local economies.  As gas prices push higher, I believe that more people will be buying products which are made nearer to their homes.  Sitting at the farmers’ market one day each week will give me an overview and hopefully some insight into how that particular local economy works, and how the people involved feel about it.

This is the first time in a month that the activity has settled enough for me to post an update.  I have an idea for an article further exploring the economics of food, which I will write as soon as I have time.  Until then, thanks for reading.
